Candidates demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice. (PSC 6.1/ISTE 6a, 6b)
Artifact: Miniature Literature Review (ITEC 7470)
Reflection: I chose the Mini-Literature Review that I researched and wrote for ITEC 7470, Educational Research as the artifact to demonstrate mastery of Standard 6.1. The purpose of the Mini-Literature Review was to help candidates develop basic knowledge and skills for critically reading and understanding educational research and evaluation reports, and to become knowledgeable about the research process. Understanding the research process is additionally designed to assist teachers to utilize research to solve classroom and/or school-wide problems. My Literature Review concentrated on the effects of technology integration on student learning and engagement. The review was performed using a combination of Galileo and Google searches, with searches on Google being limited to scholarly articles. All searches were limited in date from 2000 to 2013. After collecting a number of articles, I analyzed each article for positive aspects, negative aspects, and common themes of technology integration.
Analyzing current literature allowed me to demonstrate mastery of Standard 6.1, which states that candidates “demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice.” I demonstrated growth in knowledge by researching and then summarizing current and emerging trends in technology integration, as well as how it affects student learning and engagement. I was also able to apply the new knowledge gained to improve my professional practice as I applied the concepts of purposeful technology integration, technology-use to increase student engagement and achievement, and clear guidelines for technology use to my classroom instruction and my Capstone Project. Focusing on those ideas also helped me to improve my personal productivity, as I was able to concentrate my efforts, as well as those of my students and teachers with whom I worked.
I hope to continue to research both current and emerging trends in technology tools and technology use. Additionally, I would like to be able to report these findings to staff members at my school so that they are also able to continue to grow professionally and improve their personal productivity.
