3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources

Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)

Artifact: Emerging Technology Presentation (ITEC 7445)

Reflection:
Designing a presentation to highlight an emerging technology product for possible adoption by our school or district was a requirement of ITEC 7445, Multimedia and Web Design in Education. The purpose of the artifact was to evaluate an emerging technology that candidates would like to implement in their school or district, as the ability to evaluate products and tools for learning is critical for technology leaders. Through this presentation, I researched and presented on the ActivTable, a new product available from Promethean, the makers of the interactive whiteboards used by Forsyth County Schools (FCS).

Designing this presentation and making it available to leaders at my school allowed me to demonstrate mastery of Standard 3.6, which states that candidates “collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure.” Through the creation of this presentation, it was important to collaborate with the school Instructional Technology Specialist in order to discover the digital tools and resources already available to FCS students and teachers. This artifact also presented the ways in which the ActivTable supported the school’s vision for technology use, as well as the technical support available, the limitations of use and cost, how the ActivTable could be used by teachers in FCS, and suggestions for implementation.

If I were to have the opportunity to research and present an emerging technology for possible adoption by my school or district in the future, I would need to pilot test a tool with a focus on use in middle and high schools. During the pilot test, I would need to ensure that the tool works appropriately with our network, that it is suitable for the courses using it, and that it is compatible with the network devices using it.
