1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact: Emerging Technologies Presentation (ITEC 7445)
Reflection:
Creating a presentation on an emerging technology was a requirement of ITEC 7445, Multimedia and Web Design in Education. The purpose of the assignment was for students to select a new or emerging technology and evaluate its use in an educational setting. After completing the evaluation, students were asked to create a presentation that would be presented to teachers, principal, school district personnel, or board of education to convince them to fund and adopt the emerging technology.
Preparing the presentation allowed me to demonstrate mastery of Standard 1.3, which says that candidates must “research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines.” A large focus of Forsyth County’s vision for technology is student collaboration, shared learning experiences, and differentiation. Researching the ActivTable by Promethean allowed me the opportunity to make recommendations for how to fund and implement a new technology that meets the goals of the vision and technology plan currently held by Forsyth County Schools.
An important component of Standard 1.3 is that candidates must include funding possibilities when presenting new policies, procedures, and programs. New technology for a school or a system does not simply appear free of charge. A technology leader must be able to recommend new or emerging technologies as well as present available funding sources. This artifact required students to present potential funding sources that would effectively support the implementation of the selected technology. When preparing this presentation, I had to discuss the options available for student collaboration and shared learning experiences with school and district-level technology staff to assist in selecting select the most likely sources.
After completing the Emerging Technologies Presentation, I feel the pressure involved with carefully considering and selecting appropriate technologies for implementation more than ever. Since creating this artifact, I have had the opportunity to interact with an ActivTable. I now see more clearly how difficult it would be to adapt the activities that have already been made by Promethean for students aged 4-11 into activities suitable for middle and high school students. The funding necessary to implement my proposal would be considerable. Having the benefit of hindsight, I would select a different technology that is already adapted for all levels that would be more feasible to fund and implement.
